Adelphi Commons II

For those who are new to here, Arizona State University, and live in dormitory, dorms always serve as the place that would make them feel comfortable and mostly likely a sweet home, especially when a student comes from a different country, while everything around here for him or her is new. Besides, a dorm is a community as well. For instance, I live in R-cluster of Adelphi Commons II, every few weeks, all the residents of R-cluster are invited to an event holding in the lounge downstairs of our cluster. In addition, we do have a Facebook page that let us getting to know our neighbors. In ASU, the third most populated university of the nation, there are lots of dorms. I would like to explore my dorm for this project—Adelphi Commons II.

Adelphi Commons II in Arizona State University the home to W.P Carey School of Business residents located on the south side of the Tempe campus. It contains six units that offer private chapter rooms, common area laundry facilities, and common area kitchens. There are one shared bathroom and two rooms with two beds each in a suite. The rooms are small but it does close the distance between persons. I have a friend who is attending a private college. Thus, her dorm is featured one room one person. She told me that it is the door keeps her always from her roommates. What she and her roommates always do is get back from school, shut the room door, and stay in their own world.  After two month since the school started and they moved together, they still barely talk to each other. In contrast, my roommates and I become very close friends. In our little sweet home, we share microwave oven, refrigerator, and food, even sometimes clothes. We not only live under the same roof but also hang out together in our free time. We always say that we are like sisters in a family. And we have had known nothing about each other two month ago before we came here.

However, every coin has two sides. To living in the small room could cause conflicts too. With the closer distance between two persons, there sometimes would be arguments happening. I have a friend who lives in our dorm and he has two suite mates that would like to play pop music extremely loud and whenever they would like to. My friend has complained to them couple times and didn’t work. Therefore, he came up with a way to punish them—to play music aloud too. To achieve that goal, he even bought a beats speaker to against them. After that, every time his suite mates plays music, he plays louder music. Several days later, his suite mates got a speaker too. It became like a war between them. Nevertheless, it ended up the CA showed up and warned them to not doing that again.

As a community, the amenities in or around our dormitory are important too. In Adelphi Commons II, there are two buildings with three unites, three lounges and a laundry room each. In the laundry room, there are six washers and six dryers. The good thing about living in our dorm is it is free to do laundry at any time. But the laundry room does not look like clean at all. Because the room serves for more than a hundred of students who have individual habits, some might like to separate different piles clothes to wash while some might throw everything that looks dirty to them in the machine. I have seen some boys even throw couple pairs of shoes in the machine. It is seems that no one cares about or is responsible for the machines. At meanwhile, in the condition that the machines are working most of the time, it is obviously that the machine would age quickly. And the machine absolutely would not function as good as the normal machines.

After I have been living in Adelphi Commons II for more than two month, I did create a map about the places around my dorm in my mind. Here are some places I would like to talk about more.

These are the places that my friends and I who lives in Adelphi Commons II always spend time on. For us, Adelphi Commons II is like our second home already. It means more than just a place to sleep for us.  It is the place that gathered us and let us become closer and closer, despite of our background, gender, or age. For Arizona State University, Adelphi Commons II is the place that provides students a place to stay and start their college life with, but for us our dorm is the place that our delightful memories during our freshman year would be.
